Large-Scale Power Outage Hits San Francisco
The crisis unfolded in two waves. Initial reports from PG&E's website indicated the first blackout struck at approximately 9:40 a.m. (1740 GMT), severing electricity to around 15,000 residential and commercial properties.
A second cascading failure occurred roughly 30 minutes later at 10:10 a.m. (1810 GMT). PG&E's digital outage tracker initially documented 25,000 affected customers, though the utility subsequently revised its figures as the scope intensified.
The San Francisco Fire Department confirmed that flames erupted inside a PG&E substation Saturday afternoon, triggering at least a portion of the widespread outages.
In a statement posted to social platform X, PG&E announced it was "working with first responders and city officials on an outage in San Francisco affecting 130,000 customers."
By 5:30 p.m. (0130 GMT Sunday), a PG&E spokesperson acknowledged the company remained unable to project when power restoration would commence in any affected neighborhood.
